The Democrats exhibited the very best of liberal progressivism while advancing conservative faith in American exceptionalism. The Republicans? They have lost their way in a morass of superficiality, slogans and demagoguery. I hope that proves to be an aberration. We need the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Reagan. But where is it? I hope it has not disappeared.
There have been leaders who have advanced positions with which I have disagreed, but in whom I had confidence that they had basic competence and good hearts. There are people to my right - many, many of them - who are decent, principled people - people who have inspired me and forced me to constantly think and rethink. At times I have been humbled by their example and learned that I could love them. These people are still there. They need to assert themselves, now more than ever.
