American political culture frames patriotism in ideological terms - it has always been about more than loyalty to turf. The same, almost identical language is used by the right and left, to give moral heft to their respective positions.
We might fight for “purple mountains majesty” and “fruited plains,” but other countries have nice mountains and nice plains, too. America is as much an idea as a place. But even so, have Americans ever agreed on what the “idea” is all about?
