Then the elections came and I voted because this is still a democracy and some of us are hell bent on making sure that it stays that way.
First, they came for the Mexicans, and I protested because I don’t believe in scapegoating innocent people. Then they came for the Muslims, and I said that it is unacceptable to pander to fears. And then the came for the African Americans and I said we have tolerated racism long enough. Then they came for LGBT people and I told them to mind their own business and get a life. Then they came for the women and I said you will not turn our sisters into utilities and playthings. Then the came for the poor people and the middle class and I asked these people why so many of them undermine their own interests by listening to demagoguery. Then they came for the environment and I said that profits are well and good but of little use if we are all poisoned. Then they came for those who have different opinions about the Second Amendment and we showed them that there is still a First Amendment. Then they came for the high school students who have expressed themselves so admirably and I said that they they must not bully kids. Then they came for the international trade agreements and I asked if they teach economics at Wharton. Then they came for the journalists and I said that I know the difference between the responsible main stream press and fake news and that I won’t be hoodwinked by transparently ridiculous hot air.
Then the elections came and I voted because this is still a democracy and some of us are hell bent on making sure that it stays that way.
