People had been saying the church was Eurocentric. Now we have the first pope from the Americas. But remember that until Pope John Paul II, popes were invariably Italian. Against that centuries old precedent, "Eurocentric" was positively universal. The very idea if a non Italian pope was a real innovation. In medieval times, popes were usually chosen from one of several Roman families. An Italian, as opposed to a Roman, would have seen as provincial, not universal. The Bishop of Rome would be Roman, not from Milan nor Florence.
