The Presbyterian Church (USA) Is actually *boasting* that they collected $13,500 at their General Assembly in Detroit last month. This chump change is intended to benefit the city of Detroit ... and also the whole world.
You can't buy a while lot for that kind of money. Not for a city the size of Detroit or a planet the size of earth.
Are they serious? Since they were in Detroit, they might want to reflect that one can't even buy one decent used car for $13,500. But they are proud - and even issued a press release. Really.
Historically, the denomination has been home to much of the privileged element. Nevertheless, the PCUSA has been in free fall - losing almost a third of its membership since 2000.
Yes, money matters. It is a concrete indication of how serious people are. How much, one wonders, did the thousands of delegates to the GA spend on their own lunches?
If the delegates show such paltry generosity, what does it say about their commitment to the church mission?
